European Council
The Council has approved conclusions on enlargement for the six Western Balkans partners, Türkiye and – for the first time – Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia.
The decisions on EU enlargement, in the December 2023 meeting, included opening accession talks with Ukraine, Moldova, and Bosnia-Herzegovina, as well as bestowing candidate status on Georgia. The conclusions underlined that enlargement is a geostrategic investment in peace, security, stability and prosperity; and recalled that respecting and committing to promote the values on which the EU is founded, and fulfilling the obligations required for EU membership, are essential for all partners aspiring to join the EU.
