This article examines the potential contribution of the Western Balkans to European security and defense. Given the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the EU\u2019s efforts to strengthen its defense capacities, the region is no longer viewed merely as a beneficiary of stability, but as an entity capable of contributing to the continent\u2019s security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"393\" src=\"https:\/\/thenextmile.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/western-balkans-european-defence-1-1024x393.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thenextmile.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/western-balkans-european-defence-1-1024x393.png 1024w, https:\/\/thenextmile.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/western-balkans-european-defence-1-300x115.png 300w, https:\/\/thenextmile.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/western-balkans-european-defence-1-768x295.png 768w, https:\/\/thenextmile.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/western-balkans-european-defence-1.png 1069w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The analysis highlights the Western Balkans\u2019 strengths, particularly its defense industry, ammunition production capabilities and growing participation in NATO and European Union missions. It argues that the region\u2019s gradual integration into European defense initiatives could strengthen both European resilience and the membership perspectives of the countries concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this perspective remains limited by several obstacles, including the region\u2019s geopolitical divisions between NATO members, persistent weaknesses in security institutions, corruption and a lack of investment in military equipment. The final point worth mentioning is the economy. It is difficult to attract strategic international investment in small economies unless they join forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three NATO member countries : Albania, North Macedonia, and Montenegro should lead the way.
