There are nine EU candidate countries. In December 2023, the EU leaders decided to open accession talks with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova and grant candidate status to Georgia, in addition to the current EU candidates in the Western Balkans – Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia – as well as Türkiye. The decision to open negotiations with BiH in December 2023 was also a momentous event. Kosovo remains a potential candidate.
